Join us for this month's lunch with guest speaker Chaim Kempler, M.Sc.:
All About Berries: Science, Innovation, and Jewish Tradition

Chaim Kempler is a retired Research Scientist from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, where he spent 34 years leading the British Columbia Berry Breeding Team. His work resulted in the development of internationally recognized raspberry and strawberry cultivars known for exceptional fruit quality and unique resistance to pests and diseases.

By incorporating diverse gene pools into breeding programs, Chaim’s research helped broaden the genetic base of berry crops, addressing the challenges posed by evolving pests and pathogens. Cultivars developed under his leadership include well-known raspberry varieties such as Tulameen, Chemainus and Malahat, and strawberry varieties including Nanaimo and Whonnock.

This lecture offers a unique blend of agricultural science, history, and culture, appealing to gardeners, scientists, and anyone interested in food, tradition, and innovation. In this lecture, Chaim will share insights from his career developing innovative berry varieties and will explore the special place of berries in Jewish tradition, including their historical significance and relevance to kosher dietary laws.

Registration for this event is now closed.
