including screening of "Claire Klein Osipov—Life Sung Yiddishly"

Haya is delighted to present to the community her 2016 film, “Claire Klein Osipov—Life Sung Yiddishly”. Using Clare’s own words, Haya traces her six-decade career as one of Canada’s foremost singers of Yiddish from its start in Toronto to its fruition in Vancouver through various theatrical and media venues. The film was shown at the 2016 Jewish film Festival. After the screening, Haya will talk with us about her experience and how and what goes into documentary filmmaking.

Haya Newman received her post-secondary education in Montreal, Canada, initially obtaining a Teacher’s Diploma in Hebrew and Yiddish at the United Jewish Teachers Seminary and subsequently a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Arts at Concordia University. Her mother tongue is Yiddish.

After teaching Hebrew and Yiddish for four decades in Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver, Haya added the new portfolio of documentary filmmaker to her vocational repertoire.

Haya has produced and directed: “Wolbrom: My Father’s Hometown” (2015); “Wallenberg-Sugihara Civil Courage Award Ceremony” (2015); “Claire Klein Osipov—Life Sung Yiddishly” (2016): “I am an Iraqi Jew: the Sam Shamash story” (2017); and “Everything was Left Behind: Reflections on a Displaced Civilization” (2023).  Haya has had the honour of exhibiting her films at the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival, among other venues. Currently, her film about her mother’s hometown in Poland is in production.
