Join us for tea, coffee, a snack and fascinating lectures.

Join us for our next lecture: Learning from our Mistakes: A Philosophical Perspective

What happens to us when we make a mistake- cognitively, socially and emotionally? Is there a difference between mistakes and errors? Is it possible to create an error-free environment, and even if it were, would that be desirable? What does the history of science tell us about errors and mistakes, and how can we apply those insights in our everyday life?

In this session, we will discuss some of the interesting theory and research on mistakes and errors, in diverse fields, ranging from philosophy of science through language acquisition research to educational theory. By examining the theory of error from a philosophical perspective, we will gain some new and surprising insight into the way we learn and acquire knowledge.

Itamar Manoff is an educator and PhD candidate in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia. His research deals with the experience of error in second language acquisition, and examines the phenomenon of errors and mistakes from diverse theoretical perspectives. Itamar is an experienced language instructor, and has taught Hebrew, English and Yiddish in a variety of settings. He is also a certified facilitator and instructional designer, working at the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology at UBC.
