Join us for this month's lunch with guest speaker Hershel Hardin:
“Jack in Pemberland”, a magical realism story about an extraordinary city

For our Seniors Lunch we are happy to host local author Hershel Hardin to present his new book, Jack in Pemberland.  Within the genre of magical realism, as Hershel calls it, he offers a story about Jack, a regular kind of guy, a concrete truck driver, who stumbles upon an extraordinary city called Pemberland in his travels.  Jack finds himself in a city, for example, where housing is provided at such a law cost that nobody has to think about it.  And what’s more, Pemberlandians have access to all the doctors and nurses they need!  How do they do it?  And there, the reader’s adventure begins!  What’s the secret recipe?  How did Pemberland make these typical hardships of urban life disappear?  To get us started in our reading, Hershel offers us a clue.  Apparently, Pemberlandians limit their population to no more than 100,000 people and, even more astonishing, they’re committed to keeping it that way.  What awaits us?  What are we to behold?  Through Jack’s discoveries, how does Hershel make this socio-economic vision attainable?  To be sure, Hershel’s Jack in Pemberland will provide us with a short vacation away from these difficult times.

Herschel Hardin is an author, playwright, commentator, and former radio broadcaster, newspaper columnist, magazine writer, economic historian, lecturer, community organizer, public-interest advocate, quixotic political candidate, consultant, and even corporate director. He has also been deeply involved in charity work.  As he explains it, if you live long enough, you end up willy-nilly doing at least a few things.  He lives right here on the North Shore with his wife, Marguerite.

Hershel will be selling and signing his book at the end of the talk.

Registration for this event in now closed.
