"COVERING COMMUNITY: The Challenges and Opportunities of Jewish Journalism"

Cynthia Ramsay and Pat Johnson of the Jewish Independent will talk about what it means to them to be part of a community institution that has been informing and connecting BC Jews since 1930. They will discuss how they came to work at the paper, how the content of the paper is determined each issue, their editorial vision and more.

Cynthia Ramsay is the owner/publisher of the Jewish Independent newspaper, which was established in 1930. She has owned the paper for 25 years and also was the editor of the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC’s annual journal, The Scribe, for more than 10 years. She is a founding board member of JQT (Jewish Queer Trans) Vancouver and is on the board of directors of the Lotte & John Hecht Memorial Foundation. With a master’s in economics, her previous work experience includes being senior health economist at the Fraser Institute.

Pat Johnson has been writing for the Jewish Independent and its predecessor for almost 30 years. He has written for a broad cross-section of local and national newspapers and magazines and has years of experience as a communicator, helping businesses, nonprofits and social enterprises. Pat is not Jewish but has been hanging out with Jews for the food and fun for years. He has a degree in history from McGill and a graduate diploma in journalism from Langara College.
